Mini Carnation
History: Probably the most popular cut flower; native to Eurasia, first being mentioned in use in garlands by classical Greeks and Romans. The name Dianthus comes from dios, meaning God and anthos which is flower. By the 19th century hundreds of varieties were in existence. In Scotland, breeding new varieties was a passionate hobby for the weavers of Paisley.
The "flower of the gods" began production in this country on Long Island in 1852 with imported French carnations.
