Poinsettia

History: Originally from Mexico, Poinsettias were cultivated by the Aztecs for aesthetic and ceremonial purposes. In 1825 the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, was smitten by the plant's brilliant color. He sent some back to his South Carolina greenhouses where they were cultivated and shared with friends. Today, poinsettia's primary use is decorative, between mid-November and January each year.
